A tremendous amount of physical, emotional and financial stress is placed upon the victim and the entire family when someone has suffered a serious burn injury. If you or someone you know has suffered a burn injury due to someone else’s carelessness, you are legally entitled to compensation for your suffering.
Serious burns occur as a result of:
- Car accidents
- Industrial accidents
- House fires
- Boating accidents
- The careless behavior of others
Types of Serious Burns Include:
Chemical Burns:
When toxic chemicals initially make contact with skin there may be no pain, however, serious damage is usually apparent several hours later. Follow first aid procedures for chemical burns and always follow up with medical care.
Electrical Burns:
This includes thermal burns, electrical explosions, and burns caused by the flow of electricity into the body. The extent of damage is not always immediately apparent; always follow up with medical care.
Radiation Burns:
Burns from radiation therapy, tanning beds and the sun are caused by radiation.
Scalding Burns:
Many scalding burns are caused in the home by accidents involving steam from hot liquids cooking on the stove or fiery pots of cooking oil.
Direct Flame Burns:
These injuries occur in house fires, vehicle crashes, gasoline fires, recreational fires and brush burning accidents
Classification of Burns
Burns are classified depending on the depth of burn damage.
- First Degree Burns: involve damage to the top layer of skin called the epidermis
- Second Degree Burns: involve damage to the first and second layers of skin, the epidermis and the dermis. Deeper level, second degree burns may develop and worsen, even after the initial burn injury.
- Third Degree Burns: involve damage to the entire thickness of the epidermis and dermis
- Fourth Degree Burns: burn damage has moved beyond the dermis and epidermis and into the subcutaneous or fatty layer of the skin or further into muscle and bone.
The higher degree of the burn the more serious it is, however, any burn which affects a large area of the body is life threatening. Immediate dangers include shock, fluid loss, respiratory failure and contamination leading to infection.
Victims of serious burns require specialized care in a sterile burn treatment center, ongoing medical support, counseling, and therapy. Arranging and organizing the necessary supports is a huge task; making the costs for the injured individual and his family almost impossible. Burn injury victims hurt by the careless behavior of others are entitled to compensation.
