Ontario Personal Injury lawyers want drivers to know that the clock is ticking on auto insurance coverage reforms
Recent reforms to Ontario auto insurance come into effect as of June 1st. Drivers need to understand that in the event of an accident related injury, coverage for themselves and for their family could be significantly reduced. Those that want the necessary coverage must contact their insurer and purchase the soon to be optional coverage that they now currently have by default within their policy.
With less than 48 hours before insurance reforms come into effect statistics show that less than half of Ontario drivers know that their coverage is changing. Based on the risk of possible catastrophic injuries sustained in a car accident, many of Toronto’s personal injury lawyers believe the cost to purchase the necessary coverage is relatively inexpensive.
According to principle lawyer Brennan Kahler, many Ontario personal injury lawyers are concerned about the changes. “We deal with serious accident injury related cases every single day, what happens when the benefits victims need to rehabilitate and recover just aren’t there?”
Topping the list of concerns for many industry related professionals is the reduction in catastrophic medical rehab and attendant care benefits. Dropping from two million in coverage to to one million. “The cost of future care for serious personal injuries can add up to staggering dollar amounts. For most Ontario drivers, those costs would be impossible to pay without adequate coverage or compensation.”
“For those who are unsure, or who have questions about coverage; its important that they contact their auto insurer and request an overview of their policy coverage. Then opt in for those coverage options they feel are most important to them and their families.”
